About the event

RESIDUAL is a site-specific art show by current MA Fine Art artists studying at University for the Creative Arts, Farnham. Curated by Andrea Gregson, Senior Lecturer in Fine Art, the show includes a range of fine art media including drawing, painting, sculpture, print, ceramics, installation, film, digital media, photography and performance, sensitively responding to the buildings and gardens. The artworks expand upon themes responding to the residence as a former home, public space and place of creativity, offering new and imaginative interpretations of the house, geographical location and its visiting audiences through time.

RESIDUAL considers South Hill Park as a container of residing knowledge, matter and experience of a private country estate (1683-1940), WW2 hospital (1940-45), conversion to flats (1945-51), BBC Studios during Cold War (1952-62), Ferranti’s Aircraft Equipment Department (1965-72) to a public arts centre from 1973. The artists bring individual practices to the context of this place, finding connections between their subject matter, experience and relation to this unique site.

RESIDUAL presents an opportunity to encounter contemporary art throughout the buildings and garden areas, with artworks that embody multiple histories of objects, people and places, encompassing past and present narratives and speculative fiction.

We are pleased to be showcasing this exciting contemporary art show as part of South Hill Park’s 50th anniversary as an arts centre. A limited edition artist zine designed and made by the artists will be available with individual text works edited by Emmanuelle Waeckerle and bookRoom.
